Resting by the Yamuna river the monument was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan  (1628- 1658). It was completed in 1648 after being under construction for 17 years. The monument is the mausoleum of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It was after Mumtaz's death during child birth that the emperor had built the monument to immortalise his love for her.
